About
I'm Martin Spier — an engineering leader focused on AI and cloud infrastructure, performance and reliabilty, and platform engineering. I recently moved to OpenAI, where I'm leading ChatGPT Performance. Before that, I was VP of Engineering at Parasail, focused on AI inference, and earlier spent over eight years at Netflix leading large-scale performance engineering for the global streaming service. My work has consistently centered on making complex systems faster, more reliable, and easier for engineers to build on.
I'm especially interested in the practical side of AI: the infrastructure that makes it usable, the platform layers that make it scalable, and the workflows that make teams more effective. Lately, that includes agent-driven development, autonomous workflows, and general-purpose AI agents for productivity — alongside the platform engineering basics I've always cared about: abstraction layers, paved roads, maintainability, operational readiness, and measurable productivity.
My technical background is in performance engineering, and that perspective continues to shape how I think about systems, teams, and products. I've built open-source and internal tools spanning profiling, flame graphs, observability, and large-scale distributed systems, and I continue to invest, advise, and stay close to the technical details. I like building organizations and platforms that reduce friction, increase leverage, and help great engineers move faster with confidence.
